-> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount"

"When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could
get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off
our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double
what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's
license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"

1. Illinois: School Demands English Language Proficiency Test

An adopted homeschooled student's former English teacher dropped her
demands to monitor the young girl's progress after Home School Legal
Defense Association contacted the teacher's supervisor.

2. Patrick Henry College Teen Camp Registration Opens

Hundreds of high schoolers attend Patrick Henry College teen camps
every summer, and several new camps will expand the college's
repertoire in exciting ways. This summer's round-up of camps include:
strategic intelligence, mock trial, leadership and vocation, moot
court, history, drama, Shakespeare, debate and art. Learn more at

3. Please Check Your Bible Bee Bubble

If there is no Local Bible Bee within 30 miles of you, please consider
volunteering to host one. The Shelby Kennedy Foundation wants as many
children as possible to participate and be encouraged, recognized, and
rewarded for delving into God's word, memorizing Scripture, and
praying. The only limitation is the number of local hosts who will,
with the help of a comprehensive "Host Tool Kit," organize and conduct
local bees throughout the nation. It's not too late to become a host,
but contestant enrollment opens May 1, so please don't wait!

4. Generation Joshua Director to Speak at May Day Event

Will Estrada, director of Generation Joshua and HSLDA's Federal
Relations Department, has been invited to lead prayer for
homeschooling from 9-10 a.m. at the upcoming May Day National Prayer
event. This day of prayer, repentance, and reflection will be held at
the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 1, 2010,
from sunrise to 2 p.m. We encourage you and your family to join Will
at this historic event.

5. Poetry Contest Coming Soon

HSLDA's student poetry contest will begin accepting entries May 1.
Poems must be composed in one of three forms as specified by age
groups. Winning entries will be posted online, and cash prizes will be
awarded.

6. "Home School Heartbeat": Start Service Learning

Volunteering can be a rewarding experience for your student, helping
him to develop vocational skills, social maturity, and depth of
character. But, as guest Billie Jo Youmans explains on this week's
program, that's not all! With some thought and structure, your
student's volunteer work can become service learning--yielding
educational benefit and academic credit. Join Billie Jo and HSLDA
President Mike Smith this week for practical guidelines on
incorporating service learning in your homeschool program!
