Michigan: Calhoun County Issues Press Release
with Inaccurate Vision and Hearing Screening Information

Dear HSLDA Members:

On April 9, 2010, the Calhoun County Public Health Department issued a
press release entitled "Children Required to Have Hearing and Vision
Screening." In the release, the Department stated that all children
from age 3 to 5 who reside in Calhoun County, including homeschooled
students, must receive hearing and vision screenings. This is not

Michigan law requires the parent or guardian of "a child registered
for the first time in a kindergarten or first grade in a school in
this state" to present evidence that the child has received a hearing
and vision screening, but this requirement does not apply to students
in a home education program. However, it does apply to students
enrolled in public and nonpublic schools in the state of Michigan.

If you are operating a nonpublic school in your home for the purpose
of educating your own children, you must have any first-time
kindergarteners or first graders enrolling in your school complete a
vision and hearing screening. HSLDA recommends that you keep the
resulting certificate of hearing and vision screening in your
permanent school records. If the hearing and vision screenings violate
your personal religious beliefs, you may prepare a written statement
to that effect for your records in lieu of the certificate.

Please do not hesitate to contact HSLDA should you have any questions
regarding this matter.
