====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia -- Call to Stop Warren County from Abolishing Religious Exemption Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Without ever bothering to communicate with the people who would be affected, the Warren County School Board just adopted a bogus policy that would virtually abolish the religious exemption used by many homeschool families. Contrary to established judicial precedent and Virginia statutes, the new policy prohibits anyone from getting an exemption if attending a private school or homeschool would be sufficient to protect their religious convictions. As a practical matter, this means no one will get a religious exemption in Warren County. And to add insult to injury, the policy says the school board's decision whether to grant an exemption will be influenced by these factors -- none of which is allowed under state law: 1.) How the parents' religious beliefs compare to those of their church; 2.) Whether the parents' religious beliefs might change in the future; and 3.) Whether the parents' religious belief is "merely a social response to changing times." The last two factors above show such transparent hostility toward faith that one must wonder if this school board could ever objectively rule on a religious exemption. Even if you do not use the religious exemption now, one day you might want to. But if this policy stands, your chances of getting an exemption are approximately zero. Because of this shocking development, anyone considering applying for a religious exemption should promptly get legal advice. HSLDA will provide legal representation for any member family seeking the exemption, at no cost to the member. Silence is no longer an option. Even if you are not under the religious exemption, this is your fight. Homeschoolers must oppose this unlawful policy with one united voice. ACTION REQUESTED Please call all the members of the school board immediately: 1.) Ask them to suspend enforcement of the policy at once. 2.) Ask them to create a task force including homeschool parents to create a consensus policy. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS Catherine R.
