====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== URGENT - Please Take Immediate Action to SECURE Your Homeschool Freedom Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: HB 1580 is an important bill that would recognize parents as the primary educators of their children. The bill amends New Hampshire's compulsory school attendance law to explicitly recognize that "[i]t is the natural, fundamental right of parents to determine and direct the education of their children." In light of this week's attempt by staff at the Department of Education to sneak through new regulations, HSLDA is urging New Hampshire homeschoolers to take strong and sustained action over the next five days to pass this bill. HSLDA understands that this has been a tiring year. Your untiring efforts have been critical in defending against these numerous attempts to curtail your freedom to homeschool, but enough is enough. How many more times must we endure lectures from people like Representative Emma Rouse or State Board Member Daphne Kenyon telling New Hampshire parents that a government bureaucrat has a superior right and responsibility over their children? (See board member Kenyon's comments from this week's discussion here http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=7862 . Even though a majority of the Education Committee voted to recommend killing HB 1580, there is evidence that it can be passed. And passing this bill would send a clear message that the people of New Hampshire trust parents to make the best educational decisions for their children. The providential and overwhelming defeat of HB 368 and growing support from legislators of both parties for HB 1580 show it can be passed. Now is the time for homeschoolers of New Hampshire to find more energy to fight for the recognition that you know you deserve in the law. Please take action over the next five days and do all you can to work for the passage of HB 1580. ACTION REQUESTED Please email, call and visit your legislator and give them the following message: "Thank you for standing with homeschoolers to defeat HB 368. Please stand with us one more time to pass HB 1580. This bill is needed to recognize in state law that parents are primarily responsible to ensure that their children receive an education. HB 1580 will help protect homeschoolers from future attempts like HB 368 and efforts by staff within the Department of Education to impose unreasonable constraints on our liberty and to interfere with our natural responsibility. HB 1580 is simple and sends a clear message that New Hampshire parents have a fundamental right to determine and direct their children's education. Please vote to pass HB 1580." A rally is being planned for next Wednesday, March 17, at the Capitol to support HB 1580. More details will follow. Even if the rally permits cannot be obtained, we need to make sure that the House gallery is full and that citizens are on hand to lobby legislators. Thank you for your continued support of freedom and liberty in New Hampshire! Standing with you, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
