====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota--Call Your Senator to Support Scholarship Equity Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Thank you for your calls! Late Monday, the full Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of HB 1160, the scholarship equity bill. But the Senate version differs from the House version. It is likely that a conference committee will be appointed to reduce the two versions to one version. Both houses will then vote on the conference committee bill. Time is very short. The bill MUST come out of conference committee and be voted on in both houses no later than Friday, March 12, or the bill will be lost. ACTION REQUESTED Please call your senator and your representative immediately. Your message can be as simple as "Please give homeschool students access to the Opportunity Scholarship. They deserve basic fairness. Vote yes on HB 1160." Use our Legislative Toolbox to identify your senator and representative at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . BACKGROUND Both the House and the Senate versions give homeschoolers their first crack at this scholarship. The Senate version requires an SAT score of 1280. The House version requires 1200. The Senate version requires an ACT score of 28. The House version requires 26. The Senate version automatically exempts homeschoolers from the curriculum requirements. The House version requires the Board of Regents to make a determination about whether a student can satisfy the curriculum requirements. What should we hope for out of conference committee? A bill which automatically exempts homeschoolers from the curriculum requirements, and requires an ACT of 26 or an SAT of 1200. But the conference committee has wide latitude in what it can do. It could produce a version that is better--or worse--than either of the present version. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq. Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who are the nation's best lobbyists? We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA's Federal Relations Department is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
