Sweden Takes A Hardening Line A new law which would allow for home education only under "extraordinary circumstances" is awaiting finishing touches before it is brought before the entire Swedish Parliament where it is expected to pass. Tennessee: Homeschoolers Charged with Truancy Truancy charges were immediately dropped after HSLDA intervened on behalf of a family whose children were enrolled in the extension program of a local church-related school. Urgent Calls Needed--Health Care Bill May be Scheduled for Vote At the urging of President Obama, Democrat leaders in the House of Representatives have renewed efforts to pass the Senate version of health care reform. Illinois: Salem Citizens Defeat Daytime Curfew A loose coalition including local homeschoolers helped to stop a proposed daytime curfew in Salem that was favored by the public school regional superintendent. North Carolina: School District Reports Homeschoolers for Child Neglect HSLDA intervened when an unlawful request that a member family provide additional documentation turned into a social services investigation.
