====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota--Call Committee to Support Scholarship Equity Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Calls are needed right away to support HB 1160, the Scholarship Equity Bill. The bill passed the House on Tuesday by a 42-24 margin, but now it faces a hearing in the Senate Education Committee Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 8 a.m. in Room 423 in the Capitol in Pierre. ACTION REQUESTED Please call your senator if he or she is on the committee. Your message can be as simple as "Please give homeschool students access to the Opportunity Scholarship. They deserve basic fairness. Vote yes on HB 1160." Use our Legislative Toolbox to identify your senator at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . If you or a loved one were rejected for an Opportunity Scholarship because of homeschooling, consider coming to the hearing to testify about your experience. COMMITTEE MEMBERS Garnos, Cooper (Chair) 605-773-3821 Gray, Bob 605-773-3821 Jerstad, Sandy 605-261-1044 Knudson, Dave (Vice Chair) 605-224-6877 Nesselhuf, Ben 605-773-3821 Olson, Russell 605-773-3821 Peterson, Jim 605-695-0032 BACKGROUND When passed in 2003, the law gave the regents enough "wiggle room" to lock homeschoolers out of the program. HB 1160 mandates that the regents open the door to homeschoolers. In recognition that homeschoolers follow highly individualized programs, HB 1160 provides for alternative instruction students to be exempted from the detailed high school course credits currently required. On the other hand, the bill requires that homeschool students score higher on the ACT college admission test--26 (85th percentile) as opposed to 24 (75th percentile) for others. It is vitally important that we push for passage of HB 1160. It will open the door. Passage this year will give us the opportunity to open the door even wider in subsequent years. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq. Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> You can only do so much...
