====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia: Vaccination Equity Bill Advances to Senate Floor--Follow Up Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: On February 11, the House of Delegates voted overwhelming in favor of the Vaccination Equity Bill, HB 270, bringing us a big step closer to preventing a repeat of the regrettable events of this past fall when homeschoolers who wanted the H1N1 vaccine were pushed to the back of the line. HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff traveled to Richmond this morning to attend the Senate Education and Health Committee's hearing on the bill. Although no problem in committee was expected, it was not time to let our guard down. Woodruff was prepared to testify, as well as another homeschool mom whose child was denied the vaccine. There was a momentary "gulp" when the committee chairman twice called Del. Englin, the bill's sponsor, to step forward and present the bill, but Englin was not in the room. Woodruff left the room to check on the sponsor. Woodruff found him and both quickly returned. Englin presented HB 270, and with neither a question from the committee nor any testimony in opposition, the committee voted unanimously in favor. Following the hearing, the homeschool mom who had accompanied Woodruff at the hearing spoke to Englin. She explained that despite multiple requests, her special needs son was denied the H1N1 vaccine. He subsequently contracted the illness, became seriously ill, and was hospitalized in an intensive care unit. His survival was not a certainty. While he was in the ICU, a medical provider connected with the Virginia Department of Health told the mom to the effect: "I'm sorry we could not give your son the vaccination. We have to offer it to public school children." The committee's unanimous vote is an excellent sign that HB 270, with its mandate that the Department of Health not give preference to public school children over others, is on its way to becoming law. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Scott A. Woodruff, Esq., HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
