====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Iowa--"Suspended Homeschool Child" Articles Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: The press has carried a number of stories recently about a Carlisle, Iowa, family whose 6-year-old son the public school "suspended" because he attended an educational event with a live shotgun shell in his pocket. The articles say the lad is being homeschooled. It might be frightening to hear about a public school "suspending" a "homeschooled" child. HSLDA member families need not be anxious, however. The problem arose only because his parents put him in a homeschool assistance program. When the family open-enrolled him to the "Des Moines Home Instruction Program" (the formal name of the Des Moines HSAP), the family waived certain parental and educational rights. Those who wish to participate in a government HSAP must abide by their lawfully adopted rules. Scott A.
