====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 3, 2010 Oklahoma: Your Attendance Needed for Home Education Day at the Capitol! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Oklahoma is a state of great freedom when it comes to home education. However, as you should already know, two bills introduced this year would undermine the freedom that you have to teach your children at home. While both are bad, House Bill 3099 is the worst. This bill attempts to modify the protection given under the Oklahoma Constitution for "other means of education" by defining what type of education homeschool parents would have to provide. One of the best things you can do to help preserve freedom of home education in Oklahoma for your family and for future generations is to attend the annual Home Education Day at the Capitol on February 9. When legislators see hundreds of energetic homeschool families touring the Capitol with their bright-eyed children, it makes homeschooling more real to them, and it is more difficult for them to vote against home education. For more information about the Home Education Day at the Capitol visit: http://www.ochec.com/Categories.aspx?Id=HOME Both Oklahoma Central Home Educators' Consociation (OCHEC) and Christian Home Educators Fellowship of Oklahoma (CHEF of OK) work hard monitoring legislation and maintaining relationships with legislators. Your presence at the Home Education Capitol Day will be vital in protecting home education freedom in Oklahoma. Today is the last day for early registration! While you can come if you haven't registered, early registration is strongly encouraged. Registration allows you to get a name tag for the event, pick a track for the day and purchase a boxed lunch if desired. Visit http://www.ochec.com/CapitolDay.aspx?Id=Capitol_Day_Registration to register now. REQUESTED ACTION: 1) Come to the Capitol on February 9, 2010, to participate in Home Education Day. 2) If you have not already contacted the sponsors of the two bills that were introduced this legislative session, please visit our website at: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/OK/default.asp and follow the suggestion action. 3) If you can't come to the Home Education Day at the Capitol, please pray for the event and see if your family could bake cookies to be given out to legislators. Other ideas can be found here: http://www.ochec.com/Categories.aspx?Id=Capitol_Day . BACKGROUND Last year, approximately 800 homeschoolers showed up for Home Education Day at the Capitol. Bring your family and help make this year's event even bigger. We need a large turnout to help demonstrate that the movement for home education freedom in Oklahoma is strong! If you are not yet a member of HSLDA and would like to help us fight for greater parental rights and homeschool freedom in Oklahoma please visit http://www.hslda.org/join/apply.asp . Thank you for your part in fighting for freedom in Oklahoma! Feel free to forward this to your friends who are homeschooling but may not be part of HSLDA, OCHEC, or CHEF of OK. Sincerely, Thomas Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
