====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 7, 2010 West Virginia--WESTEST Optional For Homeschoolers Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: HSLDA was informed by the Christian Home Educators of West Virginia (CHEWV) that the Charleston Daily Mail recently published a newspaper article stating that homeschoolers are required to take the WESTEST, a test offered by West Virginia Public Schools. HSLDA would like to clarify that the WESTEST is optional for homeschoolers. West Virginia homeschool law does require homeschoolers to submit an annual assessment to the superintendent by June 30. However, homeschool parents who choose to submit test results to comply with this requirement are not required to use the WESTEST. They may use any nationally-normed, standardized test published within the last 10 years that covers reading, language, mathematics, science and social studies. The Charleston Daily Mail has recognized that the information in their article was inaccurate; however, we wanted to ensure that you have accurate information regarding what is required by West Virginia law. HSLDA would like to thank CHEWV for informing us about this error. HSLDA is working closely with CHEWV and other local organization to advocate on behalf of homeschoolers, and we stand prepared to defend your right to homeschool should it be challenged in the future.
