====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== New Jersey--Same-Sex Marriage--Calls Needed Immediately Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: A same-sex marriage bill is scheduled for a vote in the New Jersey Senate tomorrow. We need your help! The situation is even more urgent because Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts has announced that if the bill passes the Senate, he will immediately bring it to a vote on the Assembly floor--bypassing the usual process of having it scrutinized by a committee. ACTION REQUESTED Please call your state senator immediately. Your message can be as simple as: "Please vote no on same-sex marriage, S 1967. Let the people decide." Then call your assemblymen with the same message. Use our legislative toolbox to find your senator and assemblymen. http://www.hslda.org/toolbox BACKGROUND Only the people of New Jersey--and certainly not a lame-duck legislature--should be in control on an issue as profound as marriage itself. Your rights as a parent are not spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. Instead, they hinge on statements of the U.S. Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family" (Troxel v. Granville). So if the western civilization concept of marriage--one man and one woman--is undermined, parental rights may shrink or disappear with it.
