====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your calls are needed right now to stop legislation which threatens homeschooling freedom in Michigan. As part of an omnibus education bill now being considered by a conference committee of both the House and Senate, the compulsory attendance age would increase from age 16 to 18. On a very fast track, this legislation has already passed both the House and the Senate in slightly differently forms. As I write this email, the conference committee is working out the differences and preparing to present the bill for final approval when the Legisature reconvenes at 8:00 p.m. this evening. They intend to pass this legislation tonight! If this bill passes, it will mean that all homeschooling families in Michigan must comply with the homeschool law for two years longer than is now required. Please call your state senator and your state representative and tell him or her that you are opposed to this increase in state control over education. The cost to taxpayers for the additional classroom space and teachers would be prohibitive, especially during this time of economic downturn. Additionally, students over the age of 16 who do not want to continue in school would have a disruptive effect on the learning environment for other students. As this is a broad issue involving parental rights, it is not necessary for you to identify yourself as a homeschooler.
