====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== December 11, 2009 Massachusetts--Legislature Seeks to Raise Compulsory School Attendance Dear Members and Friends, After spending over a year "studying" the drop-out rate in Massachusetts, a government commission has release its report recommending, among other things, that the age of compulsory school attendance be raised to 18 and lowered to age 5. The Graduation and Dropout Prevention and Recovery Commission was created in August of 2008 in accordance with Massachusetts Senate Bill 2766. As a result, there are now several bills in the Joint Committee on Education that would expand the compulsory attendance age. The committee is considering three bills that would increase the maximum age of compulsory attendance from 16 to 18 and another bill that would lower the minimum age of compulsory attendance from 6 to 5. If passed, these bills would increase government control over children and further restrict parents' rights to direct the upbringing and education of their children. These are rights that have been recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court as fundamental constitutional rights, and must be protected. HSLDA is tracking these bills and will keep you informed as to any significant changes. Please view HSLDA's analysis of these bills and other legislation in Massachusetts at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=7336 .
