New Jersey--Help Stop Same-Sex Marriage
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Your help is needed immediately to stop same-sex marriage in New Jersey which could undermine the rights of all parents.
On Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee gave its stamp of approval to a same-sex marriage bill, S. 1967, and it's scheduled for a vote in the full Senate on Thursday.
Western civilization has always favored the birth of children into a family where a marriage composed of one man and one woman forms the protective shield for the young child. This is where parental rights had their start and where their foundation still is. But homosexual marriage undermines this foundation. If parental rights are undermined, the right to homeschool is undermined.
The U.S. Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on western civilization concepts of the family. Same-sex marriage endangers parental rights.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please call your senator immediately. Your message can be as simple as:
"Please vote no on S. 1967, same-sex marriage. Protect one-man, one-woman marriage as the foundation of our society."
Use our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to find the name of your senator. If Senator Baroni is your senator, please be especially sure to call him. He could be a swing vote if he would listen to those who put him into office.
Since this bill would affect everyone, it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler.
BACKGROUND
Supporters of gay marriage want to push this bill through in a hurry because they know defeated governor Corzine would sign it, but incoming Governor Christie would not.
Politicians currently in office have killed bills that would let the people themselves vote on this vitally important issue.
Your rights as a parent are not spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. Instead, they hinge on statements of the U.S. Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family" (Troxel v. Granville). So if the western civilization concept of marriage--one man and one woman--is undermined, parental rights may be undermined with it. And the right to homeschool is only as strong as parental rights themselves.
Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
Scott A. Woodruff, Esq., HSLDA Senior Counsel
