====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== New Jersey--Help Stop Same-Sex Marriage Dear HSLDA Members: Your help is needed immediately to stop same-sex marriage in New Jersey which could undermine the rights of all parents. The New Jersey Senate's same-sex marriage bill, S. 1967, will come up for a committee vote this Monday, and possibly a vote in the full Senate on Thursday, December 10. Supporters of gay marriage are trying to push this bill through quickly before Governor Christie, who opposes same-sex marriage, takes office. The U.S. Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on western civilization concepts of the family. Same-sex marriage undermines that concept, and thus endangers parental rights. ACTION REQUESTED Please call members of the Senate Judiciary Committee as soon as possible. Your message can be as simple as: "Please vote no on S. 1967, same-sex marriage. Protect one-man, one-woman marriage as the foundation of our society." If you only have time to make two phone calls, call your own senator if he or she is on the committee (use our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to find the name of your senator) and Senator Baroni, who could be a swing vote. Since this bill would affect everyone, it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Also, please attend the meeting of the Committee on Monday, December 7, at 1 p.m., and voice your opposition to the bill. The hearing will be in Committee Room 4, 1st floor, State House Annex, Trenton. Politicians currently in office have killed bills that would let the people themselves vote on this vitally important issue. Your rights as a parent are not spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. Instead, they hinge on statements of the U.S. Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family" (Troxel v. Granville). So if the western civilization concept of marriage--one man and one woman--is undermined, parental rights may be undermined with it. And the right to homeschool is only as strong as parental rights themselves. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Scott A.
