New Jersey--Prevent Same-Sex Marriage from Sneaking Through
Dear HSLDA Members:
The New Jersey Senate's same-sex marriage bill, S. 1967, might come up for a vote on Monday, and we need your help to stop it.
The bill is not on the agenda for the Senate Judiciary Committee as of now. But the committee could bend the rules--as lame duck legislatures often do--and abruptly add it to the agenda with little or no notice. Those who oppose the bill would have no time to respond.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please attend the meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, November 23, to keep lawmakers "honest" about the pending bill that would allow same-sex marriage: S. 1967. It will be at 10 a.m. in Trenton in the State House Annex, Committee Room 4, first floor. Be ready to express your opposition to the bill.
BACKGROUND
Several prominent New Jersey politicians have said they want same-sex marriage enacted via the legislature, rather than letting the people themselves decide. We must oppose this bill now, because we could be too late if we wait.
Politicians currently in office have killed bills that would let the people vote on this vitally important issue.
Your rights as a parent are not spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. Instead, they hinge on statements of the U.S. Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family" (Troxel v. Granville). So if the western civilization concept of marriage--one man and one woman--is undermined, parental rights may shrink or disappear with it.
Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
Scott A. Woodruff, Esq., HSLDA Senior Counsel
