====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== November 11, 2009 New Hampshire--House Democrat: "Aggressive" with Homeschoolers Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, The New Hampshire HB 368 "Definitions" Subcommittee had its second and final meeting Tuesday afternoon. Representatives Burke (Chairman), Day, and Ingbretson were present at the 20-minute meeting. Representative Day moved to add "computer literacy" to the 13 subjects required to be taught by the current homeschool law, and the motion passed 2-1. Further, the subcommittee voted 2-1 to recommend that computer literacy, and all subjects except the constitution in RSA 193-A:4, be taught every year. When Rep. Ingbretson suggested that this seemed "aggressive," Rep. Burke said, "We're going to be aggressive today." About 50 members of the public were in attendance but, contrary to procedure in other subcommittees, no public comment was allowed. Remember that the House Education Committee will discuss and vote on recommendations at the executive session, scheduled for November 19 at 10:00 a.m. in LOB 207. HSLDA continues to follow the Committee's study of the homeschool law, and we will keep you informed. Between the legislature and the State Board of Education, there are some public policy makers who are determined to impose further unnecessary and harmful regulations on homeschoolers. Homeschoolers must be prepared to take action by attending meetings and appropriately voicing their opinion to these officials. At this time, we are not recommending any specific action. The HEAC continues to work with the Department of Education to resolve the confusion around the submission of rules that were not approved by the HEAC. HEAC members will be meeting with the commissioner of education and others to resolve this before the public hearing on the proposed rules, set for December 9. Thank you for your continued support of freedom for homeschoolers in the Granite State! Very truly yours, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
