Virginia--Access to Flu Vaccination for Homeschooled Children

From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
Virginia--Access to Flu Vaccination for Homeschooled Children

HSLDA is working hard to make sure that homeschooled children have
equitable access to vaccinations for the H1N1 flu. The Virginia
Department of Health has taken steps to make the vaccine readily
available to public school children. I participated in a conference
call Wednesday with the Commissioner of Health, other state officials,
and other state homeschool leaders, and regrettably, the Department is
offering no similar arrangements for homeschooled children.

If you do not want your child to receive the vaccination, or your
child has already received it, or you have already made your own
arrangements for vaccination, please disregard the rest of this elert.
But if you are counting on the local public health department for
vaccination of your children, please read on.

If you simply show up at your local public health department without
an appointment or other special arrangements, you may find that all
the vaccine has been administered to people who are not in one of the
specific target groups, and none is left for your child.

One possible solution is to call your local public health department
in advance and ask them to set up a special "pediatric clinic," that
is, a time that is specially designated for vaccination of children as
soon as a vaccine shipment arrives. If this possible solution is of
interest to you, please call your local public health department and
ask them if they will make a commitment to set up a special pediatric
clinic when they get a vaccine shipment, either at the health
department office or elsewhere.

If you call, please let me know how they respond. If they make a
commitment to set up a pediatric clinic, we will work to help get the
word out to homeschool families in the area. If they refuse to set up
a pediatric clinic, we will evaluate the situation and take further

Another possible solution is for individual homeschool parents or
homeschool organizations to organize a special vaccination event for
homeschooled children. This might include taking advantage of an
event that is already scheduled and making vaccinations available
there. If this is of interest to you, please contact me.

It is possible that the Virginia Department of Health will reconsider
and work harder to help homeschooled children. In the meantime, be
aware that the amount of vaccine that is available across the state
right now is very slim. Much more should be available in two to three

-> Who are the nation's best lobbyists?

We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know
that HSLDA's Federal Relations Department is the only
national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on
Capitol Hill.
