====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maine: Your Vote Crucial to Protect Marriage and Parental Rights Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your help is urgently needed to protect marriage as we know it--and your parental rights. On November 3, a measure will appear on your ballot allowing you to overturn L.D. 1020, a bill the Maine legislature recently passed allowing same-sex "marriage." The actual question that will appear on your ballot will be: "Do you want to reject the new law that lets same-sex couples marry and allows individuals and religious groups to refuse to perform these marriages?" Please vote YES! Your rights as a parent are not spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. Instead, your rights hinge on various statements of the U.S. Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family" (Troxel v. Granville). So if the western civilization concept of marriage--one man and one woman--is undermined, parental rights may shrink or disappear with it. Voting YES on this ballot measure will protect the time-honored concept of the family, and your parental rights with it. Visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=7141 to find your local polling place.
