After battling authorities over the right to homeschool their 7-year-old son, a Swedish couple had their boy taken away by police just as they were about to leave the country. Oklahoma: Housing Authority Denies Homeschooling When housing authorities objected to a member family homeschooling in an apartment, Home School Legal Defense Association pointed out the family was merely exercising their rights under the state constitution. Indiana: District Demands Illegal Forms HSLDA contacted a Warrick County public school official after learning the district had mailed packets to homeschoolers making unlawful demands regarding "registration" and curriculum planning. Mississippi: Change in Certificate of Enrollment Form HSLDA has contacted the state Office of Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement, pointing out that the new certificate of enrollment form deviates from state law and that it should be revised. Student Essay Contest Coming Soon HSLDA's 2009 student essay contest will begin accepting entries October 1. The contest is divided into three age groups, each with a corresponding theme. Bible Literacy Contest Welcomes More Homeschoolers Homeschooled students are invited to follow up their success this year by entering the 2010 Children's International Arts Festival sponsored by www.KidsTalkAboutGod.org. Even though the Bible literacy contest is open to all children ages 5-12, six of the eight winners in 2009 came from homeschool families. Writing and drawing entries are already being accepted for the seven dude-ranch vacation prizes that will be awarded next year.
