====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== September 3, 2009 New Hampshire--H.B. 368 Survey to Superintendents Subcommittee Work Session Scheduled - Please Attend! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Back from the summer and ready to dig into its "study" of the homeschool law in New Hampshire, a New Hampshire House Education sub-committee has scheduled a meeting to discuss its proposed "Survey to Superintendents" on September 29, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. in Legislative Office Building 207. The intent of the survey is to "collect data" from superintendants regarding the homeschool law. We are asking homeschoolers to attend this meeting, if possible. While this meeting is but a continuation of the study effort, we believe that valid research shows that homeschooling produces superior academic performance. The New Hampshire Education committee's continuing efforts to impose increased regulation on homeschoolers is completely contrary to these facts. HSLDA opposes all attempts to modify the current law. However, if there is to be change, let it be change to reduce the amount of regulation on home educators. HSLDA will work with New Hampshire homeschool leaders and freedom-loving legislators to defend and increase freedom for New Hampshire homeschoolers in the upcoming legislative session. We would also like to make you aware of two other items. First, New Hampshire's new Commissioner of Education, Virginia Barry, will be Laura Knoy's guest on NHPR's Exchange tomorrow, Friday, September 4, at 9:00 a.m. The Exchange is an interview/call-in program. In most parts of New Hampshire you can tune in to 89.1 FM to listen. For other frequencies or more information, visit their website at www.nhpr.org . Why not call in and ask Commissioner Barry her thoughts regarding the need to "study" or make changes to the homeschool law? Second, a group of concerned New Hampshire homeschoolers have posted a petition calling on "the House Education Committee to carefully review the history and strong tradition of parental rights during their study of H.B. 368". HSLDA understands that the intent is to deliver this petition with comments to the education committee. HSLDA supports this petition and encourages all New Hampshire homeschoolers to review the petition and sign it. ACTION REQUESTED Consider attending this work session, if possible. Strong attendance at these meetings demonstrates that homeschoolers are concerned about their freedoms. There will likely be no time for public comment; however, the public is welcome to attend. If possible, bring a tape recorder or video recorder along to capture the proceedings. If you are able to provide any input (the chair may invite public comment if it desires) you might ask if there will be a "Survey to Homeschoolers", or if the committee will seek to solicit input from private schools that serve as participating agencies. Visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=6907 . Read the petition and consider signing it and leaving a comment. Thank you for your strong support for homeschool freedom in the "Live Free or Die" state! Very truly yours, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances... Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we're fine as we are . . . thank you!
