Virginia--Caution: Carroll County Public School at Home Program
Dear HSLDA Members:
Carroll County Public Schools is advertising a public school at home program in which a child can be taught at home while being enrolled as a public school student. It is called "Virginia Virtual Academy," and while Carroll County sponsors it, they are soliciting across the state for students.
Homeschool families should be aware that participation in this program turns their children into public school students, with all that entails. We expect the students will be required to take the SOL tests.
The public school program will dictate which curriculum must be used, whether or not it's the best for the child. The curriculum will not be God-centered. Public schools are prohibited from using books that help children grow in their faith under current interpretations of the U.S. Constitution.
Since participation in this program would turn a child into a public school student, membership in HSLDA is not available with respect to the student.
Homeschool students across the country are attaining outstanding academic results partly because their parents can educate them without all the restrictions and red tape found in public school programs. Just a few days ago, HSLDA announced that homeschool students scored an average of 22.5 on the ACT college admission test, compared to 21.1 overall. Dr. Brian Ray's recent comprehensive study of homeschoolers showed they score more than 30 percentile points above others.
One of the main reasons homeschooling works is because parents are able to choose a curriculum and education program that specifically meets the need of each child; therefore the children receive an individualized education program. Another reason for success is that parents have taken the ultimate responsibility for their child's educational program.
Sincerely,
Scott Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney
---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Can you look at the clouds and tell the direction of the wind?
An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground. But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing, we're there to protect your family.
