====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== August 5, 2009 Arkansas--Notice of Intent Deadline Dear Arkansas Members: For those of you planning to comply with Arkansas' homeschool law for the 2009-2010 school year, we are providing the following information by way of reminder. Parents or guardians desiring to provide a homeschool for their children must give written notice to the superintendent of their local school district of their intent to do so and sign a waiver acknowledging that the State of Arkansas is not liable for the education of their children during the time that the parents choose to homeschool. The notice must be filed with the superintendent at the beginning of each school year but not later than August 15. First-time filers must deliver the notice of intent to the superintendent in person. Arkansas school officials have strictly enforced the August 15 deadline in the past, refusing to permit the student to be enrolled in a homeschool unless the deadline is met. Fortunately, Arkansas law permits withdrawal of a student from public school to begin homeschooling by filing the notice with the superintendent 14 days prior to withdrawing the student. This 14-day waiting period may be waived by the superintendent or local school board. Parents or guardians desiring to start homeschooling at the beginning of the spring semester must give the notice by December 15. Please note that HSLDA will defend any member family whose right to teach their children at home is challenged by the state--even if their religious convictions prohibit them from complying with the state homeschool law. The information in this email is provided to those who intend to comply with state law and to assist you in meeting the statutory deadline.
