====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Iowa--Parent-Taught Driver's Ed Needs Your Calls Immediately Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, A bill that would allow homeschool parents to teach driver education to their own children is set for a hearing in the Senate Transportation Subcommittee today at 2 p.m.! Your calls are urgently needed to help this bill, Senate File 350, move forward. If successful, the bill will face a hearing in the Senate Transportation Committee today at 4 p.m. Homeschool parents have experienced many difficulties trying to obtain driver's education through the public schools. In 2004, a parent-taught driver's ed bill passed both houses of the legislature, but Governor Vilsack vetoed it. S.F. 350 will save taxpayers money by reducing what the government spends on driver's education. More importantly, it will save lives. States that already have parent-taught driver's ed have seen a reduction in traffic deaths among young people who have been taught by their parents. ACTION REQUESTED Please immediately call (515) 281-3371, the Senate switchboard, and leave a message for the senators below. Also email them at the addresses indicated. Your message can be as simple as, "Please support S.F. 350, parent-taught driver's ed for homeschool families. It will save lives, and it will reduce expenses for public schools." If your name begins with A-G, leave a message for those in group 1. If your name begins with H-M, leave a message for group 2. If N-S, leave a message for group 3. Others, leave a message for group 4. Please try to email all the members. If possible, please come to Room 22 in the state Capitol today for the 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. hearing to demonstrate your support for this bill. According to a 2000 study through the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, statistics show that lives have been saved through these laws, and there were fewer tickets and accidents. Programs are already available for parents to use. The sponsor of S.F. 350 is senator Swati Dandekar, District 18.
