====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== June 10, 2009 New Hampshire--New Compulsory School Law Activates June 30! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Two years ago, on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, the New Hampshire House passed S.B. 18 by a vote of 201 to 156. This law goes into effect in just three weeks. This means that all children under 18 will be subject to the compulsory attendance law as of June 30. Homeschoolers who comply with the home school law must, among other things, continue to file their notice of intent, provide subsequent annual evaluations and maintain records until a child reaches the age of 18 or completes a home school program at the high school level and documents that fact with a "letter or certificate". Here are answers to some frequently asked questions: Q: If my child turns 16 before June 30 must I submit an evaluation to my participating agency? A: A child who turns 16 before June 30 is not subject to compulsory attendance law and, therefore, is not subject to the current homeschool law, thus no evaluation is required. Q: If my child is under 18 and has graduated before June 30, 2009 must I provide a letter to the Commissioner of Education? A: HSLDA encourages families with children who have completed a home school program at the high school level and who are under 18 to document that fact by sending a letter or certificate to the Commissioner of Education. HSLDA has prepared a sample letter for members to use. Note: Although he may, the commissioner is not required by law to acknowledge receipt of your letter. HSLDA recommends the use of certified mail and return receipt with these letters. For more information, see our legal analysis at www.hslda.org/nh . HSLDA continues to encourage New Hampshire homeschoolers to use a private school as their participating agency. For a list of private schools that serve as participating agencies go to www.hslda.org/nh . We encourage our members with questions to call or email us! Thank you for your continued support of freedom for homeschooling in the Granite State! Sincerely, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
