====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 11, 2009 Tennessee--Call to Help Pass Resolution Supporting Educational Freedom in Germany Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, In 2008 the Romeike family from Germany moved to Morristown to seek political asylum from the repressive tactics of German authorities who will not allow homeschooling. HSLDA is supporting the family in this first-of-its-kind application. Families in Germany who wish to homeschool face jail time, thousands of dollars in fines and even the loss of custody of their children. Representative J. DeBarry has proposed House Resolution 87, "A resolution calling on the Federal Republic of Germany to recognize the rights of parents to raise their children...." The State of Georgia passed a similar resolution in April. The Tennessee resolution recognizes, "the importance of religious liberties and the right of parents to determine their children's upbringing and the method in which their education should be provided." It acknowledges that parental rights are essential to excellence in education and explains that home-educated students have demonstrated "high standards of academic achievement and citizenship." It then urges the Federal Republic of Germany to, "recognize the basic, fundamental rights of parents and allow its citizens to determine the education upbringing of their own children." The resolution is on the House Education Committee calendar for Wednesday, May 13, 2009. If passed, the resolution will be transmitted to the Federal Republic of Germany. For the contact information of the subcommittee members please visit: http://www.capitol.tn.gov/house/committees/sub-k12.html Please give them the following message in your own words: "Please support the Romeike Family by supporting House Resolution 87. This will send a message to the Federal Republic of Germany that they should respect parents' rights to direct the upbringing and education of their children as of the utmost importance to a free society."
