====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 22, 2009 New Hampshire--Education Committee Initiates "Inquisition" of Homeschool Law Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, The House Education Committee has begun its "inquisition" into New Hampshire's home education law. Despite the fact that there is no indication of any kind that the law is not working or that there are any problems, the majority in the Education Committee have established FIVE subcommittees to study each section of the law. Apparently they intend to investigate other states as well. It's more than a little shocking that a majority of the committee are willing to invest so much time and energy into analyzing homeschooling without even an iota of evidence that the law isn't working. The subcommittees will meet in public, although public input will not likely be permitted. However, a constant presence will be helpful to send the message that homeschoolers are paying attention. Furthermore, it will be important to have independent reporting on these meetings which will require dedicated effort. If you are willing to assist in monitoring these meetings please email us at nh@hslda.org with your contact information. The committee could save countless hours if they listened to the voices of the thousands of homeschoolers all over the state who have written, called, or who came to Concord to testify this year. New Hampshire's homeschool law is among the nation's most highly regulated. This year across the country many states are reducing regulation, not increasing it. For example, the Minnesota legislature is close to passing a mandate reduction act which will significantly reduce regulatory burdens on homeschoolers and local school officials. Vermont education officials have also proposed cutting the scope of state regulations. In this economic environment, legislators should be looking for ways to reduce mandates, not increase them. And the facts about the success of homeschooling demonstrate that homeschoolers do not merit more regulation. The subcommittees, representatives on the committee, and issues they will focus on are as follows: Definitions: RSA 193-A:1-4 Rachel Burke, Judith Day, Paul Ingbretson Notification: RSA 193-A:5 Charles Yeaton, Claire Clarke, Emma Rous, Joe Fleck, Ralph Boehm Evaluation and Records: RSA 193-A:6, I-II, a-d Philip Harvey, Barbara Shaw, James O'Neil, Pamela Price, Karen Hutchinson Probation /Appeals: RSA 193-A:6,III: A:7-8 (9-10) Judith Reever, Scott Merrick, Kimberly Shaw, Rick Ladd, John Laurent Survey to Superintendents James O'Neil, Kimberly Shaw, Emma Rous, Nancy Stiles, Brien Ward ACTION REQUESTED Please contact us if you are able to help cover the committee meetings.
