====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maine--Call Now to Protect Marriage and Parental Rights Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your help is urgently needed to protect marriage as we know it. Marriage as the union of one man and one woman is the foundation of our society, but now it is under attack in Maine. On Wednesday, April 22, the Committee on Judiciary will hold a public hearing on Senator Dennis Damon's L.D. 1020. This bill would radically alter the fundamental nature of marriage by allowing two people of the same gender to marry. The ramifications go far beyond what appears on the surface. Your rights as a parent are not spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. Instead, they hinge on various statements of the U.S. Supreme Court. And the Supreme Court has said that parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family." (Troxel v. Granville) But if the western civilization concept of marriage--one man and one woman--is taken away, parental rights may disappear with it. And that is exactly what L.D. 1020 does: take away the western civilization concept of marriage. It puts every parents' right to direct the upbringing of their children at risk. ACTION REQUESTED Before April 22, please call as many members of the Committee on Judiciary as possible and ask them to oppose L.D. 1020. Your message can be as simple as: "Please protect marriage as honored by generations of Americans. It is the foundation of our civilization. Please vote "no" on L.D. 1020." The number to call to leave a message for the senators is 1-800-423-6900. The number to call to leave a message for the representatives is 1-800-423-6900.
