====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maryland: Marriage in the Balance--Calls Needed Immediately Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Your help is urgently needed to protect marriage as we know it in Maryland. Thursday, March 12, at 1 p.m., the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on two antithetically opposed marriage bills. House Bill 913 will give Maryland citizens an opportunity to vote for constitutional protection for one-man, one-woman marriage. House Bill 1055, on the other hand, will wipe out one-man, one-woman marriage and allow two individuals of the same gender to marry. Our right to teach our children at home is based, in part, on the right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children. This right rests in part on the nature of marriage itself as the union of one man and one woman. Any attack on marriage will set in motion a chain of events that may lead to the undermining of parental rights, and ultimately the undermining of the right to educate one's own children. According to the United States Supreme Court in Troxel v. Granville, parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family." One of those core concepts is that marriage is between one man and one woman. If this core concept is abolished, the foundation of parental rights is dramatically undercut. ACTION REQUESTED Please call members of the House Judiciary Committee. Your message can be as simple as, "Protect marriage as honored by generations of Americans. Please support H.B. 913, and defeat H.B. 1055. Marriage as between one man and one woman is the foundation of our civilization." Please attend the hearing on Thursday to show your support for traditional marriage. If you wish to testify, you must sign up in advance. Waldstreicher (410) 841-3130, (301) 858-3130 BACKGROUND Many states have recently passed constitutional amendments protecting marriage as we know it. In fact, almost every time the issue has been put to a vote, the public has heavily favored one-man, one-woman marriage. The Maryland legislature has repeatedly prevented Maryland citizens from having the opportunity to amend their constitution to protect marriage. Although Maryland currently has a solid legal definition of marriage, the legislature could change this without a vote of the people if the House Judiciary Committee votes in favor of the harmful bill, H.B. 1055. Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
