====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 16, 2009 Idaho--Governor Signs Homeschool Freedom Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, On April 3, Governor Otter signed into law Senate Bill 1017, abolishing the ambiguous requirement that homeschooled children be instructed "comparably" to public school children. The new law takes effect July 1. Our right to homeschool our children comes from God, not the government. Nevertheless, freedom has taken a step forward with the removal of the "comparably" requirement, and with the specific recognition of the right to homeschool. With this improvement, the requirements to homeschool in Idaho can be summarized as follows: Children of compulsory age must be instructed by--or at the direction of--their parent (or guardian) in subjects commonly and usually taught in Idaho public schools. We are thankful to have contributed to the joint endeavor with ICHE and CHOIS to make this change a reality. We recommend that you send a thank-you to the two sponsors (listed below) who did a lot of hard work to get this bill passed in the House and Senate. You can reach Sen. Russell Fulcher at (208) 332-1340 or rfulcher@senate.idaho.gov and Rep. Bob Nonini at (208) 667-5762 or bnonini@house.idaho.gov. To hear more about the miracle of this bill's passage and to be encouraged with many good workshops and sessions, we urge you to register now to attend the CHOIS "Growing in Unity" Convention on June 12 and 13 in Nampa, Idaho. HSLDA Senior Counsel Chris Klicka will be speaking there and giving several sessions and keynotes. For more information and to register, visit www.chois.org. We hope to see you there! Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Will your children's inheritance retain its value?
