Texas--No More Calls Needed for House Bills 188 and 2084
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Thank you for your calls on the last two e-lerts concerning the
declaration of child's rights bill (House Bill 188) and access to a
child by a grandparent bill (House Bill 2084). Your calls have been
heard loud and clear.
Regarding the child's rights bill, H.B. 188, our legislative counsel,
Tom Sanders, has received a report from Rep. Roberto Alonzo that he
will no longer be pushing for his bill to be heard. The bill is now
considered dead and will not receive a hearing before the Human
Services Committee. Your calls made a significant difference in
protecting parental liberty in Texas.
Regarding the grandparents bill, House Bill 2084, we have also
received a report that many calls are being received by the Human
Services Committee. The calls were important because the committee
was stacked with more Democratic representatives than Republicans. We
believe this will set the stage for a favorable committee hearing on
the bill.
We have now been told by Rep. Phil King, H.B. 2084's sponsor, that no
more calls are needed at this point. Anyone who wants to attend the
hearing can do so, and a final strong showing of people at the hearing
supporting the bill should get it through the committee.
