Vermont -- Please attend April 21 Homeschool Day at the Capitol
Dear HSLDA Members:
Save the date--April 21, 2009, and attend Vermont's Homeschool Day at the Capitol. This year's day at the capitol is extremely important because there will likely be an attempt to change the homeschool law in Vermont in response to the budget proposed by Governor Jim Douglas.
Vermont's homeschool laws are among the most restrictive in the country and have many problems. Specifically, these problems include the requirement that homeschoolers prove that a child isn't disabled (no other state requires such a thing) and its due process provisions. This allows the commissioner of education to call a hearing before and after enrollment, where disallowance extends to the following school year and with appeal only possible to the Vermont Supreme Court. There may be an opportunity to improve the law, and we will all need to work together to support positive change.
In 25 years, HSLDA has seen that effective capitol lobby days are vital to furthering homeschool freedom and decreased regulation. A face-to-face meeting between a legislator and a homeschooling family gives the legislator the opportunity to see firsthand the positive benefits of homeschooling. Informed homeschooling constituents who meet with and demonstrate interest in their legislator's activities provide that legislator with reasons to vote in favor of maintaining homeschool freedom. The Homeschool Day at the Capitol also provides an opportunity for your children to go on a field trip and learn about state government and how laws are made in Vermont.
More details regarding the Homeschool Day at the Capitol will be forthcoming. We strongly encourage you to mark this date on your calendars and plan to attend if at all possible.
Thank you for your commitment to defending homeschool freedom in Vermont.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
