====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 31, 2009 New Mexico--Homeschoolers Still Have Time To Submit Annual Notice of Intent Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thanks to CAPE-NM and HSLDA, glitches in New Mexico's annual homeschool notification procedure are slowly being resolved. The following is an update on several problems: 1. Hard copy notification forms--including HSLDA forms--have been returned to parents not because they were on a non-PED (Public Education Department) form but because they lacked information. Specifically, they did not include the child's birth date. HSLDA's form has been changed to include a birth date rather than an age. CAPE is still working with Dr. Don Duran, New Mexico's Assistant Secretary of Education, to have the PED accept an age in lieu of a birth date. 2. The online PED form confirmation page times out before parents are able to print it. PED staff is working to resolve this problem. 3. Someone on the PED staff incorrectly stated that only the online PED form will be accepted. Dr. Duran has communicated to his staff that any legible written notification with all required information should be accepted. If the notification is incomplete but includes a phone number or email address, the family should be contacted to obtain the additional information. Only incomplete forms with no phone number or email address should be returned to the family. Complete forms have the following information: > Parents'/guardians' contact information, > School district of residence, > Student's name and date of birth, > A declaration that the home school operator has a high school diploma or GED. 4. Some people have been told that notifications submitted after April 1 will result in denial of the right to homeschool for the next school year. This is incorrect. Dr. Duran has stated that late notification forms will be accepted and processed; however, if a form is submitted late, the PED is unable to accurately inform truant officers and interested social workers that a student is legally enrolled in a home education program. If you have not notified, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. The PED's preferred notification method is the online form, and they have assured us that the website security problem has been resolved. However, if you are more comfortable notifying on paper, you can use the printable PED form (http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=6343 ), CAPE's form (http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=6344 or HSLDA's members-only form, available at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=6345 . Thank you for your support of homeschooling freedom in New Mexico!
