====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 26, 2009 Texas--Calls Needed to Prevent Child's Bill of Rights From Going Forward Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: The Texas legislature has introduced a very dangerous bill that would undermine parental rights. House Bill 188 was created to make sure that "children are the number one priority of this state." The bill has very vague language stating that the child has the right to "live in a safe, healthy, and comfortable home in which the child is treated with respect; ...be free from ... any form of discipline that humiliates or demeans the child...receive access to a quality education...receive appropriate medical, dental, vision, and mental health services." This type of language can be used against parents who use corporal punishment, alternative medicine, and possibly even homeschooling. It is not needed and is very similar to aspects of the dangerous U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, which we continue to oppose at the federal level. This bill also creates "Family Education Centers", which will be designed to, "provide comprehensive family educational activities and training." These centers are also designed for the purpose of educating parents. This is the government playing the role of a nanny. We believe it is important that the committee receives calls so that this bill never moves or is even scheduled for a hearing. It is good to be on the safe side to make it known that the legislation has significant opposition so that it keeps it from ever getting off the ground. ACTION REQUESTED Please call the House Human Services Committee members and give them this message in your own words: "Please oppose H.B. 188. This bill undermines parental rights and is not needed." Do not identify yourself as a homeschooler; instead you can identify yourself as a concerned parent and taxpayer. Abel Herrero - 512-463-0462 Rep. Drew Darby - 512-463-0331 Rep. Gary Elkins - 512-463-0722 Rep. Ana Hernandez - 512-463-0614 Rep. Bryan Hughes - 512-463-0271 Rep. Ken Legler - 512-463-0460 Rep. Parents, in many ways, are becoming "second class citizens" as lower courts elevate the power of the state to supersede the wisdom of parents. Parental choice is in jeopardy. Freedom is at stake. The basic fundamental freedom of parents to raise their children hangs in the balance. Although the U.S. Supreme Court clearly recognizes parents' rights as fundamental and thus protected by a higher standard of review, many lower courts over the last 25 years have eroded this traditional view of parental rights. This bill will endanger the fundamental rights of parents to make medical decisions, discipline, and direct the education and religious training of their children. For more information on parental rights visit www.ParentalRights.org . Thank you for your support of freedom in Texas! Sincerely, Chris Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
