Home School Legal Defense Association
Michigan: Your Attendance Needed at Capitol Day

======================================================================
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
======================================================================

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Home School Family Day at the Capitol is coming to your area on April
28 and 29, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event will be held
in Lansing, Michigan in and around the Capitol Building. Families may
choose to attend either day, which will essentially be the same.

We at the Home School Legal Defense Association want to encourage you
to attend this event. I believe it is very important for as many
homeschool families to attend as possible. My 24 years of experience
has taught me that these capitol lobby days are one of the most
effective ways of preventing or stopping bad legislation. The
face-to-face contacts these legislators have with good homeschool
families make it very hard for a legislator to vote against
homeschooling.

HSLDA attorney Thomas "Tj" Schmidt will speak on The Importance of
Vigilance, and lead a workshop on The Threat to Parental Rights. He
will explain how international law can eliminate our freedom to
homeschool and to determine our children's upbringing.

Leaders will have the opportunity to meet with him and Jack Hoogendyk
at a special leaders reception from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m.

We encourage you to attend and take advantage of this special program.
Your homeschool family will have a unique opportunity to observe the
legislative process and spend time with elected officials at the State
Capitol. You will learn firsthand how laws are made, attend a
committee meeting, visit your representative and senator, and observe
a legislative session in progress. Choose from a variety of workshops
and attend a legislative luncheon with state legislators and leaders.

Be sure to plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators!
Tell their office when you are coming, that you would like to see
them, and schedule a time. There will be handouts available for you to
give both days of the event.

During the visit with your representative and senator, you will also
have the opportunity to express opposition to H.B. 4130, H.B. 4132,
H.B. 6674, and S.B. 170, which would raise the compulsory school
attendance age to 18, and to S.B. 122, which would lower the
compulsory school attendance age to 5.

This event is sponsored by the Home Education League of Michigan along
with legislative co-sponsor Senator Alan Cropsey (33rd District) and
former Representative Jack Hoogendyk (61st District), both homeschool
dads.

BACKGROUND:

Below are five MORE reasons to attend Legislative Day:

> Dispel any negative myths of the homeschool movement.
> Give legislators an understanding of the large numbers of
homeschoolers within the state.
> Provide positive literature to legislators regarding homeschooling.
> Spend one-on-one time with your legislator.
> Your presence is necessary to show that the homeschool movement is
alive, well, and thriving strong.
Please, help keep homeschooling free in Michigan. We make a
significant statement to your representatives when hundreds of home
educators participate in rally at the Capitol on April 28 and 29.
We are keenly aware that our parental and homeschool freedoms are best
preserved when we all stand together to defend them. We look forward
to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Chris Klicka
Senior Counsel
