====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 23, 2009 Ohio: Contact your Representative to Oppose Controversial Education Reform Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Governor Strickland made it clear in his State of the State address that he plans to lead an education reform in Ohio, and he has now proposed legislation to this end. Representative Vernon Sykes introduced House Bill 1 on February 12, 2009. The bill has been referred to the Taxes Committee. H.B. 1 is Ohio's state budget bill. It is a lengthy piece of legislation that would make many controversial changes to Ohio's education laws. If passed, it would, among other things, extend the school year by one month, require school districts to offer all-day kindergarten, and expand state-mandated testing to include the attitudes and behaviors of students, including scoring criteria of interpersonal skills as a part of earning a diploma. Measuring attitudes and behavior is further evidence of the kind of education the government wants to provide children in its schools. It is using the schools to teach values that are at odds with what most of us would agree with. These kinds of "reforms" were attempted years ago and were defeated by a broad coalition of Ohio citizens including homeschoolers. While these provisions would only directly affect public and chartered private school students, all taxpaying citizens in Ohio should be concerned. Because public schools contribute to the culture by educating the next generation of citizens, we should be concerned about this approach to education. Furthermore, it is possible that over time this kind of philosophy, if not opposed now, could affect future homeschooling regulations. Therefore we believe that it is appropriate for homeschoolers to take an interest and oppose these new measures proposed by the governor. ACTION REQUESTED Please contact your representatives, and politely tell them in your own words to oppose H.B. 1 unless the education reform provisions are removed. There is no need to state that you are a homeschoolers since the legislation does not directly impact homeschooling. You can locate your legislator at http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/ or you can leave a message for a representative by calling the capitol at 1-800-282-0253. Thank you for your continued support of freedom in the Buckeye state! Sincerely, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
