Minnesota--Proposal Regarding Tax Credit May Affect Homeschoolers
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
House File 1782 was introduced by Representative Ann Lenczewski on March16, and was referred to the Taxes Committee. If passed, H.F. 1782 would repeal the educational tax credit and deduction sections of Minnesota law as well as some other tax credit and deductions.
HSLDA supports tax credits because parents and individuals who provide for a child's education should be allowed to keep some of their tax money that would otherwise have been used to fund public education. With this money parents have greater freedom in choosing how and where their children are educated. It also helps reduce overcrowded public school class sizes. Minnesota's current education tax credit has been an important part of recognizing the importance of education, and homeschoolers have benefitted from the credit, along with all Minnesotans.
While H.F. 1782 repeals Minnesota's current tax credit and deduction, it also adds a "child credit" provision. This provision allows parents to receive credit against their assessed taxes of up to $200 per child. Thus, depending upon your family income and educational expenses, this new proposal could actually be more beneficial than Minnesota's current tax credit law. However, the credit does phase out depending on income, so at a certain level of income, depending on how many children a family has, there would be no tax credit. This legislation would affect homeschoolers, and it may reduce the amount of tax benefit to some.
HSLDA is working closely with MACHE and is tracking H.F. 1782. Please stay tuned for further updates. You can follow the status of this bill and other legislation affecting homeschooling in Minnesota at: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/MN/default.asp
Thank you for your support of homeschool freedom!
Sincerely,

"When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
