====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Iowa--Call Sen. Riley to Save Parent-Taught Driver's Ed! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, The chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, Tom Riley, is trying to "pass the buck" on parent-taught driver's education. He has transferred it to another committee. This will kill the bill, because there will not be enough time for it to get through that additional committee. This bill MUST pass committee and the full Senate by this Friday, March 13, or it will be dead for the year. ACTION REQUESTED Please call Sen. Riley immediately and ask him to bring the bill, S.F. 350, back into his own committee and take quick action on it. Your message can be as simple as, "Don't pass the buck on parent-taught driver's education, S.F. 350. Take it back into your committee where it belongs, and move it quickly. It will save lives as well as taxpayer money. The bill has already been thoroughly analyzed, since a nearly identical bill previously passed both houses overwhelmingly and was supported by the Iowa Department of Transportation." You can call and leave him a message on the Senate switchboard, (515) 281-3371, or email him at tom.rielly@legis.state.ia.us. If possible, call or email your own senator and tell him you contacted Sen. Riley about this. Be polite, but be firm. BACKGROUND Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nebraska and Colorado have already changed their laws to allow parent-taught driver's education for homeschoolers. Many other states have always allowed parents to be involved in driver's education for their own children. According to a 2000 study through the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, statistics show that lives have been saved through these laws, and there were fewer tickets and accidents. Programs are already available for parents to use. The sponsor of S.F. 350 is Senator Swati Dandekar, District 18. The Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators (NICHE) joins HSLDA in supporting this bill. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely yours, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
