Minnesota--More Action Needed to Support Homeschool Freedom
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Earlier this week we reported to you about S.F. 846 / H.F. 1037, the homeschool mandate reduction legislation.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please contact your legislator by Friday, February 27, 2009, and attend the MACHE Day at the Capitol on Monday, March 2.
Give your legislators the following message in your own words:
"I support S.F. 846 and H.F. 1037, the homeschool mandate reduction bills. Homeschool families in Minnesota have demonstrated success. With the state's budget in crisis, these bills will free up resources for the public schools while reducing the amount of time required by superintendents and homeschool families to comply with unnecessary bureaucracy."

You can get more details regarding the Capitol Day on the MACHE web page at www.mache.org .
BACKGROUND
The bill would limit families to reporting only once--when they start homeschooling or when they move. It would eliminate the submission of report cards and give parents more options in choosing tests. It removes language pertaining to annual visits and provides a more cost-effective mediation approach in truancy disputes. It streamlines record-keeping of immunization records for school districts. While homeschool families would give up receiving state nonpublic pupil aid ($77 a student for books), this is made up for in the reduced reporting and is offset by the tax deductions/credits for education expenses and sales-tax exemption.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
