====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois: Your Calls Needed to Protect Traditional Marriage Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Representative Greg Harris has filed House Bill 2234 (now referred to the House Rules Committee), which defines a civil union as between two persons, of either the same or opposite sex. The law enables same-sex couples to have the same protections and benefits under the law as marriages between one man and one woman. Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Your parental rights, in turn are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights. ACTION REQUESTED Call your state representative and the Rules Committee members and give this message: "Please oppose H.B. 2234 that defines a civil union as between two persons of the same or opposite sex. This bill elevates same-sex persons to that of married men and women. The rights and benefits can be obtained through private agreement and the state does not need to endorse such an agreement." Turner (Democrat) - 217-782-8116 BACKGROUND How does redefining marriage as being between one man and one woman or creating civil unions in effect providing same-sex marriage potentially affect your right to homeschool your children? Here is what the Supreme Court said in 2000 in the case of Troxel v. Granville: "Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family (a married couple of one man and one woman) as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course." Parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family." When those concepts are no longer the legal definition of the family in this nation, then the foundation upon which parental rights are based is completely removed. HSLDA will continue to fight against same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage attacks the traditions of the family in western civilization.
