====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Call Now for Scholarship Equity Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Calls are needed immediately to support a bill that will make all state college scholarships available fairly to homeschoolers. Senator Ken Cuccinelli's S.B. 1547 passed the Senate unanimously, but now it needs your help in the House. There will be a subcommittee hearing at 5 p.m. today, and likely a full committee hearing soon thereafter. Homeschoolers routinely get rejected for state scholarships that require a grade point average, such as the Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP). S.B. 1547 clears the way for homeschool graduates to be eligible to participate. For some families, this could be the difference in their child going to college. ACTION REQUESTED Please today call members on the committee. If your name begins with A-G, please call group 1. If your name begins with H-M, call group 2. If your name begins with N-R, call group 3. Morrissey (804) 698-1074 BACKGROUND For years we have been unable to help families who wanted access to scholarships but were rejected because their grade point average, class rank, graduate status, etc., was not accepted by the scholarship agency. This bill levels the playing field and gives our kids the same opportunity as others. The bill will be amended in committee to address some secondary issues we pointed out.
