Alaska--Calls Needed to Oppose Government Nanny Bill - Correction
Contact information for House Education Committee members has been updated.
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Do you want the government to become your child's nanny?
Your calls are needed to stop House Bill 69, the "Alaska Parents as Teachers Act," which would establish a parent education home visiting program for children from birth to age five. These visits would be conducted by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development at least once every month. The program would involve monthly parent group meetings and annual developmental and health screenings of the children. Although this would begin as a voluntary program, it is most likely the first step to a mandatory program.
HSLDA believes that parents, not state bureaucrats, are best qualified to determine what is best for their individual children. In the absence of evidence of abuse or neglect, state officials should not interfere with the upbringing of children by their parents.
House Bill 69 is scheduled for a hearing before the House Education Committee on Wednesday, February 11, at 8:00 a.m. Your representatives and members of the committee need to know that families in Alaska oppose this overreaching legislation. Please contact them today!
ACTION REQUESTED:
1. Please call and email as many members of the House Education Committee as possible and urge them to vote against House Bill 69 with this message:
"Please vote against House Bill 69, the Alaska Parents as Teachers Act, which would interfere with the right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children. Parents, not state officials, are best qualified to determine what is best for their individual children."
Please do not identify yourself as a homeschooling family, since this issue is broader than just homeschooling.
