====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 30, 2009 Wyoming--Legislature Proposes an Amendment Defending Marriage Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, The Wyoming state legislature is proposing a constitutional amendment which would make marriage between one man and one woman the only legal union recognized by the state. In order to become law, House Joint Resolution 17 (H.J. 17) must first pass both houses of the Wyoming state legislature by a vote of at least two-thirds. The amendment will then be placed on the ballot at the next general election to be ratified by voters. According to WyWatch Family Institute, 74% of Wyoming voters would like to see an amendment to protect marriage between one man and one woman. H.J. 17 is sponsored by Representatives Petersen, Anderson, Brechtel, Buchanan, Edmonds, Hallinan, Harshman, Mercer, Miller, Quarberg, Semlek and Teeters How does defining marriage as being between one man and one woman potentially affect your right to homeschool your children? In Troxel v. Granville (2000) the United States Supreme Court said: "Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course." Parental rights are based on "Western civilization concepts of the family". These rights are undermined by attempts to impose radically different ideas of the family like "same-sex marriage." Because the right of parents to homeschool is based on the traditional family, we must oppose attempts to redefine family like "same-sex marriage". To view the text of H.J. 17 go to WyWatch Family Institute's website, and click on the bill title: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=6038 . H.J. 17 is a mirror of Senate Joint Resolution 2. It was referred to the House Judiciary Committee on January 27, 2009. ACTION REQUESTED 1) Please Contact members of the House Judiciary Committee and urge them to support H.J. 17.
