====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 30, 2009 Nebraska: Please Attend the Homeschool Legislative Day Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, On Wednesday, February 18, 2008, the Nebraska Christian Home Educators Association (NCHEA) is sponsoring its third annual Legislative Day at the Capitol. HSLDA Staff Attorney for member affairs in Nebraska, Michael Donnelly, will be in attendance as families from all over Nebraska meet in Lincoln to watch hearings, meet senators, learn about the unicameral and find out how to protect parental rights. The event is free, and family members of all ages are welcome. The day will include: > Training on contacting senators; > Investigating how a bill becomes a law; > Receiving resource materials; > Observing part of a legislative hearing; and > Participating in a special tour of the Capitol. After last year's fight against L.B. 1141 it should be apparent how important this is. During each session of the unicameral, NCHEA and HSLDA monitor bills, hearings, and debates that impact your parental rights. It is our goal to work together to educate senators about your inherent right to homeschool and the benefits of homeschooling. In 25 years, we have seen how effective legislative days are in preventing bad legislation or enacting good law. A face-to-face meeting between a legislator and a homeschooling family gives the legislator the opportunity to see firsthand the positive benefits of homeschooling. Informed homeschooling constituents who meet with and demonstrate interest in their legislator's activities provide that legislator with reasons to vote in favor of maintaining homeschool freedom. If a legislator never meets a homeschooler, he may have no reason to support parental freedom to homeschool and may vote against homeschooling if presented with the issue. In addition to protecting your freedom, the Home School Day at the Capitol provides a great opportunity to your children for a field trip to learn about state government and how laws are made in Arkansas. NCHEA Home Educators Legislative Day will be packed with civics adventures and learning for all! The registration deadline is February 4, 2009. Register today at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=6016 Plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators. Take advantage of this opportunity. Don't miss this year's great event! For more information, go to www.NCHEA.org, or contact Deb Badeer at nchea@nchea.net In addition, NCHEA is starting a new arm of legislative contact aimed at building relationships with senators by recruiting and training at least one constituent family per district. NCHEA would like to have at least one family in each of the 49 districts volunteer to contact their senator three or more times per year with a personal visit, emails, calls, and letters of thanks. Senators receive very little thanks for their service, and many complaints, so basic kindness and respect are powerful tools of relationship development. At the bottom of the Legislative Day Registration page there is an invitation to join "HELM", which stands for Honoring and Encouraging Legislative Members. NCHEA will have a 20-30 minute informative meeting with the HELM team right after the Legislative Luncheon. All volunteers are encouraged to attend this meeting. This day is important as we work to build relationships and maintain your liberties. I hope you will join me and attend! Sincerely, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
