1. Minnesota: Family Decides Price of Charter School's Free Education
Is Too High

One semester was all it took for the Smith family to realize that the
virtual charter school they enrolled their children in was not as
flexible or faith-friendly as genuine homeschooling.

2. Georgia: Homeschoolers Denied Access to Joint Enrollment Program

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has a policy
which effectively denies homeschool students the opportunity to
participate in the college joint enrollment program.

3. North Carolina: Social Worker Threatens Truancy Charges

This past December a school social worker in Dunn (Harnett County)
threatened truancy charges against a mother attempting to withdraw her
daughters from public school to teach them at home.

4. Tennessee: School District Seeks Work Samples from Homeschoolers

HSLDA recently assisted a member family who was told to submit samples
of their children's schoolwork to the local school district for
examination.

5. Texas: Homeschool Family Faces Fabricated Allegations

HSLDA helped a homeschooling family as social services attempted to
investigate them twice for the same allegations.

6. Art Contest Submission Deadline Approaching

Students have until February 1 to submit entries for the 2009 HSLDA
Art Contest. There are three contest categories corresponding to three
age groups, each with a particular theme. Cash prizes will be awarded.

The staff at the National Bible Bee Headquarters is reminding everyone
that the deadline for registering Local Bible Bees is January 31,

9. Generation Joshua: Benjamin Rush Awards

Generation Joshua is excited to announce the official 2009 launch of
the Benjamin Rush Awards Program. Several changes have been made to
the Ben Rush program for'09 to help expand the program to more high
school students. Our goal as an elite scholarship awards program is to
motivate and equip high school students to use their voice for good in
the democratic process while providing incentives, such as college
scholarships and iPods, to students who participate.
