New Mexico-- Please Attend the
13th Consecutive CAPE at the Capitol Event!

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

This year's Home School Day at the Capitol, sponsored by the Christian
Association of Parent Educators of New Mexico (CAPE), will be
Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the New Mexico State Capitol, Santa Fe,

We at the Home School Legal Defense Association want to encourage you
to attend this event. We believe it is very important for as many
homeschool families to attend as possible. My 20 years of experience
has taught me that these capitol lobby days are one of the most
effective ways of preventing bad legislation. The face-to-face
contacts these legislators have with good homeschool families makes it
very hard for a legislator to vote against homeschooling.

The Home School Day at the Capitol is also a wonderful opportunity for
a field trip for your children to learn firsthand about our government
and how laws are made!

Be sure to plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators!
This is an opportunity you cannot afford to miss!

Below are five MORE reasons to attend Legislative Day:

> Dispel any negative myths of the homeschool movement.
> Give legislators an understanding of the large numbers of
homeschoolers within the state.
> Provide positive literature to legislators regarding homeschooling.
> Spend one-on-one time with your legislator.
> Your presence is necessary to show that the homeschool movement is
alive, well, and thriving strong.

Please, help keep homeschooling free in New Mexico. We make a
significant statement to your representatives when hundreds of home
educators participate in rally at the capitol on February 5.

Contact Louis and Cindy King, Capitol Day Coordinators, at
505-847-2322 (home), 575-799-9228 (cell), or,
and RSVP before February 1 so that nametags can be printed for you and
your children. Even if you don't RSVP, come anyway! Also, if you know
your district or the names of your legislators, that will help them
earmark a packet of information for you to deliver.

Plan to meet for orientation at 9:00 a.m. in Room 307 (House Finance
Committee Room, which is west side of the Rotunda, up one floor, just
south of the elevator doors). Presentation of Home School Proclamation
and "Home School Hour" will be in the Rotunda from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

We hope you can come this year!

If you have time and are interested, please make an appointment to
meet your legislators . All you need to do is
type in your ZIP code in the website listed above to find your
legislator, and then call the capitol office secretary and ask for a
brief meeting before or after the session. Or just call the
Legislative Switchboard at 505-986-4300 and ask for your
representative's office. Introduce yourself to their secretary and ask
for a brief meeting. Repeat with your state senator. If you are
hesitant, FEAR NOT! At orientation, CAPE will prepare you to meet and
greet them if you haven't done so before.

Remember to leave plenty of time for parking! For other parking
options, check out the free Legislative Shuttle at or for a smaller fee on parking, visit this
site: . Otherwise, just leave time to park on
the east or west side of the PERA Building just east of the
