====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 14, 2009 Wyoming--Amendment Defending Marriage Proposed Dear HSLDA Members, The Wyoming state legislature is proposing a constitutional amendment which would make marriage between one man and one woman the only legal union recognized by the state. In order to become law, Senate Joint Resolution 2 (S.J.0002) must first pass both houses of the Wyoming state legislature by a vote of at least two-thirds. The amendment will then be placed on the ballot at the next general election to be ratified by voters. According to WyWatch Family Institute, 74% of Wyoming voters would like to see an amendment to protect marriage between one man and one woman. S.J.0002 is sponsored by Senators Curt Meier, Stan Cooper, Dan Dockstader, Gerald Geis, Grant Larson, Drew Perkins and Ray Peterson, and Representatives Rodney Anderson, Bob Brechtel, Kathy Davison, Amy Edmonds, Owen Petersen and Mark Semlek. How does defining marriage as being between one man and one woman potentially affect your right to homeschool your children? In Troxel v. Granville (2000), the United States Supreme Court said: "Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course." Parental rights are based on "Western civilization concepts of the family." These rights are undermined by attempts to impose radically different ideas of the family like "same-sex marriage". Because the right of parents to homeschool is based on the traditional family, we must oppose attempts to redefine family like "same-sex marriage". WyWatch Family Institute promotes and supports legislation that sustains our constitutional rights, upholds Judeo-Christian values on which the nation was founded, protects innocent life from conception to natural death, preserves the rights of parents to raise and determine the education of their children, and maintains the institution of marriage as being between one man and one woman. Please call your representatives and urge them to support this amendment. ACTION REQUESTED Contact your local and state representatives and let them know that you support S.J.0002. HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
