====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== December 12, 2008 New Mexico--Help Needed for 2009 Legislative Season! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: The Christian Association of Parent Educators - NM (CAPE-NM) is gearing up for New Mexico's 2009 legislative season, and they need your help! With the post-election composition of the New Mexico legislature, it appears that the 2009 session will pose more battles for the family. Legislation can be filed as soon as December 15, so it is imperative that organization happens quickly! CAPE is forming a coalition of people to advocate for moral and ethical values and is asking homeschooling families to volunteer their time for one of the following: 1. CITY OR COUNTY COORDINATOR: Commit to contact every church and group in your community in the next two weeks, and recruit at least one contact person for each. Be willing to remind, motivate, encourage, and pray with your contact people so that they do not grow weary or discouraged. 2. CONTACT PERSON: Volunteer to speak to your own church and your support group in the next two weeks, handing out 3 x 5 cards for names, phone numbers, and email addresses. The contact person will set up (or delegate and supervise) a group email list, receive alerts from the coalition, and forward emails. This person must be willing to BE that contact person in his or her church, speak and pray with the pastor, and maybe even lead a team of people to the Capitol for a day. 3. RESPONSIVE (AND RESPONSIBLE) FAMILIES: Pray, send emails and postcards, make phone calls, and be willing to go to Santa Fe to attend committee meetings and show support for moral and ethical values. Remind, motivate, encourage, and pray with your family so that they do not grow weary or discouraged. God willing, as far as it is possible, be prepared to respond at a moment's notice. In addition, families may be asked to: a. Ask others to sign up; b. Send an email, a letter, a post card; c. Make a call on an issue; d. Talk to friends and acquaintances about the need to protect our freedoms and stand for principles; and e. Commit to $5 per month to the effort (For the coalition to use for newspaper and TV advertisements). ACTION REQUESTED If you are willing to serve in one of these areas, reply to CAPE with your choice (1. City/County Coordinator, 2. Church/Organization Contact, or 3. Family). Please include your name, email address, church or organization, and location. CAPE's contact information is below: CAPE-NM P. O. Box 3203 Moriarty, NM 87035 info@cape-nm.org BACKGROUND: The CAPE-NM board of directors is convinced that New Mexico urgently needs a nonpartisan coalition of passionately determined families committed to preserving the family in a hostile world. CAPE's main goal is to support homeschooling families, and it will continue to protect and defend the right to homeschool. However, the group feels that to accomplish this purpose, they must band together with like-minded and equally determined men and women who will lead others to pray and speak out on all family-related issues, including home education. The homeschooling community is known for its dedication to traditional family values, citizenship, passion, and action, and as a result, CAPE has been asked to lend its effective support to pro-family issues. CAPE's bylaws and purpose limit its involvement in issues such as the fairness doctrine, hate crimes, etc. that are equally important but not directly related to homeschooling. Thus, CAPE is using its influence to recruit people for a statewide Coalition for Moral/Ethical Values that will tackle these issues. Led by veteran New Mexican statesmen (not just politicians) like Congressman Steve Pearce and Walter Bradley, pastors, and businessmen, the coalition is looking for 250,000 volunteers throughout the state to join an emergency email network that will reach people at a moment's notice to address potentially fatal legislation scheduled to be passed in the next legislative session, which is just weeks away. Thank you for taking the time to consider CAPE's request. Sincerely, Christopher J. Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
