Michigan: House Introduces Bill
To Raise Compulsory School Attendance Age
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
On November 19, 2008, Representative Alma Smith introduced House Bill
6674, which would extend the upper age limit of compulsory school
attendance from 16 to 18 years. This bill threatens to restrict a
parent's fundamental right to direct his or her child's education. It
also expands the state's control over your children by two additional
years.
This bill will be considered during Michigan's 2009 legislative
session. At this time, HSLDA is not requesting that any action be
taken; we simply want you to know that this is a bill we will be
opposing. However, please be prepared to take action in the future.
